Hyperword: Compare textbook prices, search, translate, post…

Posted by Tracy Mendham on August 12, 2009

There’s an add-on called Hyperwords for the Firefox browser that I’ve been using for number conversions (square feet to acres, US dollar to other currencies), language translation, and searches, but I found a handy new use for it yesterday that I thought would be helpful to incoming students–comparison shopping for textbooks.

Hyperwords allows you to right-click on a word or phrase and search multiple online stores for the item.  That means that you can go to a page such as a college bookstore list for courses you’re taking in September, select and right-click the title of one of the texts, and then search one or many vendors for your books.  (I ended up using a combination of Amazon and AbeBooks for two courses I’m taking in the fall.) See the video below for a demonstration of Hyperwords.

Students might find this article in today’s New York Times about how to separate your social circles in Facebook helpful.  Even more important than sheltering one’s parents from one’s social life, though,  is maintaining privacy about certain things from potential employers or graduate school admissions offices.

You may feel it’s OK for your colleagues to see some of your Facebook photos (like those from the conference you attended), but not others (like those from the party). You also may be a little uncomfortable with the boss reading your wall posts, especially if your friends have an odd sense of humor at times.

If you’re not ready to expose everything about you to anyone who asks to be your online friend, it’s time you learned how to use Facebook’s friend lists.

A little over a year ago, Facebook launched a new feature called “Friend Lists.” With lists, you can create groups of friends on Facebook, separating work from family and close friends. It’s simple to use, but it’s definitely an underutilized feature.

Open Letter to Students About the ASC

Posted by Tracy Mendham on July 23, 2008

Hi, I’m Tracy Mendham, a learning specialist in the Academic Services Center at Franklin Pierce University, and this is an open letter to incoming students. I know that students are more likely make use of my department’s services if they know who we are and what we do. And since the services we offer can really help students survive and succeed, I want students to feel comfortable with us. So here’s a quick introduction to the ASC.
